Testing Dial Tone at the ONT in a Fiber to the Home Exchange

Outdoor ONT

You have a Network Interface Device (NID) and an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) housing on the outside of your home.  In the event of no dial tone inside the location, check for dial tone at the NID (see above instructions for Testing from A Network Interface Device).  If you get dial tone at the NID, the problem is inside wiring, or equipment plugged into a phone jack.  If you get no dial tone at the NID, open the ONT housing to test further.

Testing at the outdoor ONT

  • Open the ONT housing and look at the lights on the left side of the box.  The Power (PWR) light should be solid amber. If not, check ONT indoor power supply.
  • The CPU light should be solid or flashing amber. If not, check ONT indoor power supply.
  • If the OFF HOOK light is orange, there is a phone inside that is not hung up.
  • To test for dial tone on the ONT, plug a corded phone into the LINE 1 jack.  If there is  dial tone there, the trouble is inside.
  • Make sure to place the line cord back in the LINE 1 Jack.

Call Triangle at 1-800-332-1201 to report no dial tone at the ONT or NID 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Indoor ONT

In some of the Fiber to the Home Exchanges, we have moved the fiber electronics indoors from the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) housing.  While the location may have changed, the functionality of the ONT remains the same.

Testing at the indoor ONT

  • Observe the operating lights on the edge of the Indoor ONT. The top light should be solid green (if subscribed to internet and Advanced Wi-Fi) or blinking red (Dial Tone only, or basic/customer provided CPE). This will show the device has power.
  • If there are no lights check the Indoor ONT power supply (Instructions below).
  • If the second light is solid green, there is a phone connected to the ONT that is not hung up.
  • To test for dial tone on the indoor ONT, unplug the existing cable from the LINE 1 jack on the back of the ONT. Plug a corded phone into the LINE 1 jack.  If there is dial tone there, the trouble is either a phone set, accessory, jack or inside wiring.
  • Make sure to place the existing cable back in the LINE 1 Jack.
