General Phone Troubleshooting Tips

Customer Equipment Information

Customer Owned Equipment
Any repair or maintenance of customer owned equipment is the responsibility of the owner through the manufacturer or an authorized agent.  If a customer’s equipment interferes with proper operation of the telephone service, the telephone company may temporarily disconnect that equipment until it is in proper working order.

Noise on a Cordless Phone
Several factors, not associated with the telephone line itself, may cause noise on cordless phones.  Noise can be generated by weather, florescent lighting, CB radios, AM/FM radio stations, and other temporary conditions and equipment.  Oftentimes, replacing the handset battery will solve the problem.  Please contact the cordless phone manufacturer for assistance.

What’s Wrong With My Telephone?

Locating the problem
Telephone troubles can be caused by a telephone set, wiring inside your location, or the telephone line connected to your location. Triangle Communications encourages you to do some simple troubleshooting tests before you call. If a service call is made to your location and it is your phone set causing the trouble, you may be charged for the service call. Technicians do not repair or replace the telephone sets. If you have Inside Wire Maintenance, repairs of the jacks and wiring inside your location maybe covered. Triangle recommends to always keep a corded phone on hand for testing and for use during a power outage.

Troubleshooting

  1. Unplug all telephones and accessories (answering machines, faxes, modems, computers, security systems, satellite dishes, etc.) from your phone jacks. Leave everything unplugged for at least five minutes.
  2. Plug in a corded phone to a phone jack to test for dial tone.
    1.  If you have dial tone, plug in each piece of equipment one at a time to see which one is causing the trouble.
    2. If you do not have dial tone,  look for the network interface device (NID) on the outside of your location, plug a corded phone into the test jack inside the NID.  If you have dial tone, the trouble may be with inside wiring.
    3. If you still do not have dial tone, you may have our digital voice package.  With this package, you are able to test dial tone on the back of your Calix router.  Plug in a corded phone to a phone jack on the back of the router to test for dial tone.
    4. If you have dial tone, there may be a problem with your inside wiring.
